A look back at the previous European Cup finals at Twickenham

With kick-off only days away in the Champions Cup final between Toulon and Clermont Auvergne at Twickenham we look back at the previous European Cup finals at the home of English Rugby.

2012

The last European Cup final to be played at Twickenham was an all-Irish affair when Leinster took on Ulster. Unfortunately it was not a game for the neutral with Leinster hammering their provincial rivals 42-14 in what was quite a one sided affair. Leinster fans didn’t mind too much as it was their third European Cup success in four years.

2007

The final in 2007 was an all-English affair as Wasps went to battle with Leicester Tigers. In what was a tight first half Wasps pulled away in the second winning 25-9 to claim their second European Cup. As for the Tigers they still wait for a third European Cup after losing again in the final to Leinster in 2009.

2004

the 2004 final was a game that went right down to the wire as Toulouse took on Wasps. With only two minutes left in the 2004 Heineken Cup final, the game seemed to heading to extra-time with Wasps and Toulouse level at 20-20. However Wasps were able to secure the win with Clement Poitrenaud failing to deal with the bouncing ball and Rob Howley was on hand to get to the ball first and touch down in the corner to win the cup for his side.

2000

In what was at the time the first final without a French side involved, Northampton Saints and Munster met at Twickenham in what was a first European Cup final for both sides. In what was a low scoring affair, the Saints were able to win their first and only European Cup 9-8 thanks to the boot of Paul Grayson. With O’Gara missing four penalties and a conversion it was a missed opportunity for Munster. They lost a final in 2002 as well but they were not going to lose a third final when they defeated Biarritz in 2006.
