Eddie Jones Backs Relegation & Promotion for Six Nations

Eddie Jones has had his say on the Six Nations Relegation/Promotion debate that is dividing opinion.

The tournament organisers meet today under pressure to open up the tournament to the ambitious rugby nations such as Romania, winners of this season's Rugby Europe Championship from Georgia who won the previous 6 editions.

The two time Six Nations winning head coach wants to see a new system introduced, a move in which he hopes will make the tournament more competitive and improve the quality of rugby in Europe.

' Georgia and Romania have enormous potential. They have good gene pools for rugby and Georgia in particular has the infrastructure to push forward, ' said Jones.

' What they should ideally do is have a proper Six Nations B division and then have a play-off game against the bottom side from division A. Wouldn't that be exciting?

' Imagine playing Georgia in front of 60,000 in Tbilisi to keep your place '

The Azzurri finished bottom of the 2017 Six Nations having won only once in their last 20 matches and yet to finish in the top half since they were introduced in 2000.

From 18 campaigns in the Six Nations, the Italians have found themselves finishing bottom on 12 occasions.

The tournament organisers are reluctant to put the Italians' place in jeopardy.

A play-off system has been discussed but it could not be introduced until 2020 at the earliest.
