England kit design at cross purposes

The RFU backtracked embarrassingly yesterday on their decision to publicise a Victoria Cross design on the newly launched England kit.

The Victoria Cross — the highest award for gallantry that a member of the British and Commonwealth armed forces can receive — is incorporated in the shape of small rubber grips across the chest area of the new shirts, in the traditional white, and red for the change strip.

According to Canterbury, the kit manufacturer, these will act as a “ball-deadening grip” to aid control.
