European Champions Cup Preview: Pool 3

Last year’s European champions Toulon remain on course for a place in the knockout stages as they lead the way with 13 points. Leicester Tigers who defeat Scarlets last night have given themselves a chance of progressing to the final eight are now level on points with Toulon. Scarlets and Ulster complete the group with both sides out of contention and are now playing for pride.

Leicester Tigers have given themselves a glimmer of hope of progressing to the knockout stages after they defeated Scarlets 40-23 at Welford Road last night. The Tigers knew that they had to get a four-try bonus point to keep their slim chances and they were able to do that scoring six tries in the game. Scarlets responded with three tries of their own but were outplayed throughout the game. Leicester now travel to Ravenhill in round 6 needing a win and most likely needing a bonus point as well if they are to have any chance of making it through to the quarter-finals.

Toulon entertain Ulster on Saturday looking to pick up another win in pool 3 as they look to top the group. Ulster who sit bottom of the pool are out of contention for a place in the knockout stages after suffering defeat to Scarlets in round 4 and are now just playing for pride. In the reverse fixture between these sides Toulon were able to come away from Ravenhill with a 23-13 win and they will be expected to do the double over the Irish side on Saturday.
