Sam Warburton returns to Cardiff Rugby as a board member.

Sam Warburton OBE has returned to Cardiff Rugby as a board member.

The former Cardiff, Wales and British & Lions ace spent nine seasons at the club and returned as a board advisor in August 2019.

It transpired to be a short-lived appointment after the 34 year-old linked up with the Wales coaching staff later that year.

However, Warburton has now been reappointed and will take a full part in all board proceedings, bringing particular expertise on rugby matters.

Warburton said: “It’s a genuine honour to be able to join the Cardiff rugby board once again. While these remain challenging times in Welsh professional rugby, I am fully committed to doing everything I can to help this great club and I am optimistic about what the future holds.

“From a season ticket holder at the age of 14, right through to being fortunate enough to captain the side, I’ve always remained extremely passionate about Cardiff - the club’s growth, its success and the vision to get back to where we belong.”

The appointment is the latest example of the modernisation of governance at the club and Warburton will begin his advisory role immediately.

During an illustrious playing career, Warburton played 106 times for the Blue and Blacks and was part of the team that won the 2010 Amlin Challenge Cup. He won 74 caps for Wales, in which he was captain for 49, winning two Six Nations titles and a Grand Slam, while he remains undefeated as a Lions Test series captain.

Since retiring from the game, Warburton has established himself as one of the world’s leading commentator and pundits, has built a successful business in SW7 Academy and has a number of advisory and non executive appointments. He was awarded an OBE in 2018

Cardiff Rugby chair, Alun Jones added: “We are delighted that Sam will join our board once again. His experience and insight into the game speaks for itself and his advice will be vital as the global game continues to develop and our domestic game adapts to the challenges before it.”
