The Lions nearly wasted their No.1 seeding for the playoffs and needed a 55-metre penalty from Ruan Combrinck to set up a mouth-watering clash against the Hurricanes in the Super Rugby semi-finals.

The Jo'burg based side were heavy favourites for the match but found themselves falling off tackles, missing shots at goal and turning over a lot of ball due to uncharacteristic handling errors in an error-strewn first half.

The Sharks led with 15 minutes remaining after loose forward Daniel Du Preez powered over with the exciting fly-half Curwin Bosch adding the extras. However, Combrinck was left with a shot from inside his own half to steal the victory at the death.
