Ireland booked their spot in the quarter-finals with a 47-5 win over Samoa in the teams final pool matches at the Rugby World Cup. Ireland started strongly and ran in three tries to build a 21-0 lead, with Samoa picking up a yellow card in the process. Samoa hit back with their first score and Ireland received a red card 28 minutes in to play the remainder of the game a player short. Despite their numerical disadvantage, Ireland crossed for the bonus point try on the stroke of halftime to take a 26-5 advantage into the break. Ireland completely dominated the second half, with both territory and possession in abundance as they went over for three more tries to seal a comfortable victory to move to the top of pool A for the time being. Ireland await the result of the Japan v Scotland encounter which will determine if they finish top or runner up in the pool.
