Lions training camp to cost Jersey £175,000

The British & Irish Lions have scheduled a training in camp in Jersey which will reportedly cost the local authorities around £175,000 over a fortnight with all the team’s expenses.

Despite the large sum – which is said to be coming out of Visit Jersey’s marketing budget – Senator Lyndon Farnham feels positive in the hopes that it will bring Jersey good exposure.

"I think it will put Jersey further on the map, being recognised as a safe and vibrant environment for athletes to come and train," he told ITV.

"The visit of the Lions will attract significant international attention.

"They [locals] can expect a spectacle of professional rugby at the highest level. There will be lots of opportunities to watch the Lions train.

"The Lions will also involve themselves in the local community. I understand there will be school visits and a charity fundraiser. It's worth saying that the Lions operate within a Covid-secure bubble so there will be limited opportunities to shake hands and hug them, but there will be a lot of community involvement."
