Wallabies playmaker leaves the door open for Bath switch

Wallabies playmaker leaves the door open for Bath switch

Melbourne Rebels and Wallabies playmaker Matt To'omua has been linked with a return to the English Premiership according to The Rugby Paper.

To'omua spent three years at Leicester Tigers before returning to Australia before the Rugby World Cup in Japan but is now being linked with a move to Bath.

To'omua is one of a handful of Wallabies who, as part of the pay deal struck a week ago, are allowed to chase cash overseas as a way of recouping hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost earnings due to the COVID-19 lockdown.

The one provision on players in To'omua's pay bracket/ situation about heading abraod is that it must not clash with international windows.

This leave just part of the Premiership and potentially the Japanese Top League as the only options.

When asked about the report, the Melbourne Rebels star told The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age he was looking at all options.

"Like all players, I am doing my best to analyse the ever-changing landscape that is professional sport," To'omua said.

"I owe a lot to rugby in Australia and my plan is to continue playing here, if the situation permits. My aspirations post-playing career are sports admin, and I’d love to do everything I can to help the game in Australia."

The playmaker is contracted to Rugby Australia and the Rebels until the end of next year but while To'omua and other star Wallabies have agreed to the new pay deal, the Sydney Morning Herald has learnt some mid-tier and junior players are weighing up their options.

Sources told the Herald each player had to agree to amend their contract as part of the pay deal.
