Could Saracens host the World Champions?

Saracens are looking to bolster their fixture list during their season in the Championship next season and could face top international teams, including the Springboks according to reports.

According to The Sunday Times of London, discussions are underway to face tier-one Test nations. Along with the Springboks Saracens could also play against the Barbarians and Super Rugby teams.

Saracens played a midweek fixture against the Springboks at Wembley in 2009, coming from 18-6 behind to win 24-23. Nine South Africans were in the club’s lineup that night.

Saracens will be relegated from the English Premiership at the end of this season for breaching the salary cap. Their top priority is to secure promotion back to the top flight for the 2021-22 season.

Interim Saracens CEO Edward Griffiths told the newspaper the club would be taking their matches in England’s second-tier competition seriously.

‘We will fully respect the Championship,’ he said. ‘We want to be constructive members of the Championship and we want Championship teams to feel that having Saracens in the league is a positive experience.’
