Jonny May left sprawled out on the turf with a concussion after 'slingshot' tackle

England winger Jonny May's return to the Cherry and Whites jersey was cut short on Saturday after he was left sprawled on the turf after being on the receiving end of a dangerous tackle in Gloucester's win over Worcester Warriors on Saturday afternoon.

May made the switch to Gloucester from Leicester Tigers during lockdown having orginally left the side in 2017 to sign with Leicester Tigers.

He was attacking into the Warriors' 22 midway through the first half where he was met by two Worcester defenders, the second of which was full-back Melani Nanai, whose challenge looked potentially dangerous in real time and even worse on the replay.

The collision left May on the deck as physios rushed to his aid with playing being halted immediately as referee Christophe Ridley checked with his TMO.

Replays confirmed that Nanai's right arm was by his side in a "slingshot positioning", as Ridley described it. His shoulder made direct contact to the crown of May's head, leaving the officials little choice but to show the red card.

The red card also saw Nanai's return cut short with the former Blues' fullback making his first appearance since the reverse fixture of this game in December last year.

The red card came at the time when Worcester were leading 5-0 following an early Ted Hill score but from there it was all Gloucester as Billy Twelvetrees nailed the penalty as Jack Singleton, Ollie Thorley (2), Jason Woodward, Stephan Varney and Louis Rees-Zammit all dotting down to secure the 15-44 victory.
