Looking Back - Player Ratings: Wales v England

With the World Cup looming and sides starting to fine tune their tactics and players England and Wales go head to head this sunday. The last time they played Wales earned a historic win and went on to take the Grand Slam. We take a look at the player ratings from that day

Wales:

1. Rob Evans - 6.5

Got around the park well making 9 carries and 8 tackles. Struggled at times in the scrum but an overall strong game.

2. Ken Owens - 6.5

Spilt the ball in the build-up to Tom Curry's try and missed his jumper with a few of his throws but worked hard on defence and attack.

3. Tomas Francis - 7

Solid in the scrums and was strong on defence. Moved a few bodies with some great clear outs.

4. Cory Hill - 7

Busy around the park, getting stuck into the rucks and disrupting England's maul. Ran a great line and kept a good body position to score the try that gave Wales the lead before he left the field with an injury.

5. Alun-Wyn Jones - 7.5

Performed to his usual high standard getting stuck into abosultely everything. He lifted his side when it mattered most but did have a mishap or two calling the lineout.

6. Josh Navidi - 7

Excellent as ever in the rucks and on defence. Made 9 carries and 12 tackles.

7. Justin Tipuric - 8

Gave away an early penalty for a high tackle but recovered to have another strong game. Tipuric was superb in the rucks and chased kicks brilliantly.

8. Ross Moriarty - 8

One of Wales' go to men for front foot ball, Moriarty made 20 carries in the match and threw his weight around in the rucks.

9. Gareth Davies - 6.5

A few wayward kicks but his passing was crisp and efficient. Was lucky to get away with a charge down right after Cory Hill's try.

10. Gareth Anscombe - 7

Put in some clever kicks that put the English back three under pressure but did waste possession on occasion.

Dan Biggar - 8.5: Superb off the bench, guiding his side to victory.

11. Josh Adams - 7.5

Did well to keep Jack Nowell relatively quiet and took a sensational catch to clinch the victory.

12. Hadleigh Parkes - 8

Racked up 70 running metres beating 2 defenders and made 1 clean break. Carried the ball well to the line giving Wales great front foot ball.

13. Jonathan Davies - 8

Davies was a rock in defence making numerous intelligent decisions and did the same on attack.

14. George North - 7.5

Made the most of the little ball he saw. Carried the ball hard to the line and made a great call to hold onto the ball before Cory Hill's try.

15. Liam Williams - 9

Excellent under the high ball and covered the backfield well with Owen Farrell and Ben Youngs looking to find grass. Williams made an incredible chip chase in the latter stages of the game. Simply sensational game from the Bristih and Irish Lion.

England:

1. Ben Moon - 7.5

Massive on defence making 19 tackles and filled the void left by Vunipola. Hardly put a foot wrong in a 76 minute performance.

2. Jamie George - 8

One of the best Englishman on the park. Made 22 tackles without missing a single one.

3. Kyle Sinckler - 6

Strong in the scrums but gave two silly penalties away, the second of which gave Anscombe the kick at goal to make it a one-point game, before he was replaced before the hour mark. He was busy on defence making 18 tackles.

4. Courtney Lawes - 7

Dominant in everything he did. He hit the rucks with sheer power and made some trademark big hits. He also came up with a key turnover in the build-up to Tom Curry try and was excellent throughout.

5. George Kruis - 7

A massive shift on defence and he got stuck into the rucks. Kruis ran the lineout superbly and came up with a fantastic steal early on in the game.

6. Mark Wilson -  7

Another Englishman who put in a massive shift on defence making 20 tackles.

7. Tom Curry - 8.5

Simply superb, Curry was everywhere. His tackle was off the charts and he did brilliantly to ghost through the Welsh defence to score the first try of the game. He was also a menace at the breakdown and won a crucial penalty just after the hour mark.

8. Billy Vunipola - 7

A less effective evening from England loose forward gaining just 41 running metres 19 carries.

9. Ben Youngs - 6

A less effective kicking performance bettered mostly by Wales' back three.

10. Owen Farrell - 6

A strong first half performance by the England captain but struggled when Wales started to take control of the clash.

11. Jonny May - 6.5

Saw less of the ball than he did in previous matches but did well on defence making all 9 of his attempted tackles. Put in a great kick and chase when Wales looked dangerous before half time.

12. Manu Tuilagi - 7.5

Tuilagi put in some thumping tackles and had a few nice runs, one of which could have led to a try had Wales not scrambled well.

13. Henry Slade - 7.5

Excellent on attacking making 67 running metres and had some flashes of brilliance that caught Wales off guard.

14. Jack Nowell - 7

Nowell worked tirelessly off his wing to try give England an edge but most of his efforts were in vein.

15.  Elliot Daly - 6.5

Missed a long range effort off the tee in the first half but was relatively safe under the high ball and countered well.
