A last gasp penalty saw the Bristol Bears edge the Northampton Saints 18-17 in round 3 of the Premiership. Saints started the match superbly, running in two tries to race into a 14-0 lead after jus 15 minutes of play. Bristol hit back with a try midway through the first half and thought they had a second just before the break, but that was chalked off due to slight knock on as they trailed 14-5 at halftime. Five minutes into the second half Bristol reduced the deficit to six points with a penalty. The Bears had opportunities to keep the scoreboard ticking over, but two shots at goal went wide as the score remained 14-8 heading into the final quarter. Bristol were made to pay for their missed chances, as Saints kicked a penalty 68 minutes in to make it a two score ball game at 17-8. Bristol needed a response and came roaring back with a try shortly after to narrow the gap to only two points with eight minutes remaining. There would be one last twist in the tale as the Bears were awarded a late penalty, which they slotted as the final play of the match to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
