Premiership Rugby facing a significant drop in the value of its broadcasting rights - report

Premiership Rugby is facing a significant drop in the value of its broadcasting rights according to a report in the Times.

The Premiership failed to agree on a deal with either BT Sport or Sky before the coronavirus crisis struck with England’s elite division hoping to secure a bumper deal but industry insiders believe Premiership Rugby will now struggle to get anything close to the £40million a year it receives from BT Sport for the present six-year deal, which expires in a year’s time.

According to the newspaper, BT Sport had an exclusive negotiating period with the league but that has come and gone without the broadcaster renewing.

It is understood that Premiership Rugby’s chief executive, Darren Childs, has since held lengthy talks with Sky bosses but has failed to agree a deal.

Broadcasters had expected the rights sale to be completed before June but now that is set to be delayed until there is more certainty about the sport’s emergence from the pandemic.
