A strong finish by the Waratahs saw them edge the Melbourne Rebels 31-26 in round 17 of Super Rugby. Each side slotted a single first half penalty, with the Waratahs running in two tires to one the difference at the break as they led 17-10. An early second try for the Rebels saw the score locked up at 17-17. It was all Rebels, with their pressure rewarded as they kept the scoreboard ticking over with three penalties to lead 26-17 heading into the final quarter. The Waratahs crossed for their third try with a little over ten minutes remaining to reduce the deficit to just two points. Soon after and they were in again with their fourth try to hit the front with around 7 minutes remaining. The Rebels had a chance at the death to snatch it, but the Waratahs held on to extend their Australian Conference lead over the Rebels to four points.

Rebels: Matthew Philip: A colossal performance from the big man, carried tirelessly with some brilliant runs showing superb pace, good skill with ball in hand and at securing restarts.
 
Waratahs: Kurtley Beale: Always dangerous with ball in hand, went through a half gap to set up Naiyaravoro's first half try and a timely intercept which led to Hanigan's score to get them back in the match late in the second half.
