The King's Debut - Carlos Spencer's first All Black test

The magic of “King Carlos” delighted the global rugby community for the better part of 16 years.

His professional career started in 1994, in the colours of Auckland, and what was clear from the beginning - with his swift footwork, adventurous spirit, marvellous handling skills, educated boot, vision and all-round X-factor – that the youngster was destined to take the field in the black jersey.

He played his first game for the All Blacks in 1994 in a non-test match but his official debut took place on 21 June 1997 at Athletic Park in Wellington against Argentina.

To say it was a dream debut would be an understatement, as the little maestro managed to notch up a personal tally of 33 points, including two tries, in a 93-8 drubbing of the South Americans.

Spencer won a total of 44 All Black caps and his unique and sparkling command of the game remains etched in the minds of rugby lovers everywhere.
