JC Pretorius first made his mark in South African rugby representing the Pumas at the under-16 and under-18 levels. His exceptional skills, combined with his speed and agility, earned him recognition, and in 2017, he was selected to represent the SA Schools side.

Pretorius' impressive performances did not go unnoticed, and he was subsequently contracted to the South African Sevens Academy. His transition to the sevens format showcased his versatility and adaptability on the field.

In recognition of his exceptional abilities, Pretorius earned a place in the South Africa 7s squad ahead of the 2018/19 World Rugby Sevens Series. This marked a significant milestone in his rugby career, as he joined the elite ranks of the national sevens team.

In January 2019, Pretorius's talent was further acknowledged when he was named as a traveling reserve for the Blitzboks in the Hamilton 7s tournament. Just a week later, he received the honor of being included in the main squad for the Sydney event, demonstrating his rapid progress and potential within the sevens format.

Following his successful stint in sevens rugby, Pretorius made the decision to transition back to fifteens rugby and signed with the Lions.
