Jon Welsh

13th Oct 1986 1.85m/123kg Tighthead Prop

Welsh is a tighthead prop who offers plenty in both the tight and loose aspects of the game.

He was signed by Glasgow Warriors after successful appearances for Scotland Club XV against Wales and Ireland in February 2008. One of the most consistent front-rowers in the RaboDirect PRO12, Welsh was named in the competition's Dream Team for season 2011/12.

Before signing a professional contract, Welsh had three seasons with Glasgow Hutchesons’ Aloysians, and before that he was with Whitecraigs. He was named in the Scottish squad for the Six Nations in 2015.

Welsh joined Newcastle Falcons in summer 2015 fresh from a victorious Pro 12 campaign with Scottish side Glasgow Warriors. Having made 106 club appearances since joining Glasgow in 2008 the former junior boxing champion joined Newcastle ahead of the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

Impressing in his early showings for the Falcons’ Welsh’s debut season in the North East was cut short when he suffered a toe injury which ruled him out for the back half of the campaign. Bouncing back in 2016-17 with a strong campaign, the former electrician signed a new contract in the summer of 2017.

Welsh was named in the Scotland squad for the 2018 Six Nations.

As of the 2018/2019 Champions Cup, Welsh has had 31 European Cups appearances scoring 1 try.

In January 2021, it was announced that Welsh would be re-joining Falcons in the tighthead role at the age of 34.
