A physical and aggressive lock, Coetzer started his senior provincial rugby with the Bulls Vodacom Cup team in 2005. 2006 saw a move to the Western Province Vodacom Cup team but returned up north to the Valke for the 2007 Currie Cup. Signing with the Pumas in 2009, Marius has become a stalwart in the team in the Vodacom Cup, Currie Cup and has featured in Super Rugby with stints at Lions (2012) and Stormers (2013).
