Nortjé began his rugby journey at Hoërskool Wonderboom, where he honed his skills and showcased his potential. His impressive performances caught the attention of the Blue Bulls, and he was selected to represent the team at the Under-18 Academy Week in 2016. Recognizing his talent, the Blue Bulls invited Nortjé to join their academy after finishing his school years.

In 2018, Nortjé's abilities earned him a place in the South Africa Under-20 squad for the World Rugby Under 20 Championship. He made significant contributions to the team's success, featuring in all three pool stage matches and playing a pivotal role in their journey to the semi-finals. Nortjé's try-scoring performance against England showcased his skills and determination on the international stage.
