Tom Collins hails from Northampton, having grown up in the area where his father and grandfather played for Northampton Town FC. He began his sporting journey in the Cobblers' youth team before transitioning to rugby at Franklin's Gardens as a member of the Saints Junior Academy.

Collins' talent was quickly recognized, and he earned a spot in the England age-group set-up, scoring two tries in a victory over France in 2012. He was also a member of the squad that won the Under-20 Six Nations in 2013 and played in the senior team in the following year's Six Nations.

Collins' performances for the Saints in the 2013/14 season earned him regular playing time, and he featured in 13 games as well as the historic Premiership semi-final win over Leicester Tigers. In the next season, he was named LV= Breakthrough Player of the Season for his outstanding displays. Collins played for the Wanderers in the 2016/17 and 2017/18 campaigns, where he won back-to-back titles and helped the team achieve the third-longest winning streak in Premiership Rugby A League history.

In the 2017/18 season, Collins made his 50th appearance for the Saints at the young age of 23, and also played a crucial role in the team's victory over Leicester Tigers for the first time at Welford Road in 11 years. Under Chris Boyd's leadership, Collins played in 25 matches in the 2018/19 season, and was the Saints' second-highest try-scorer with 11 tries to his name.

In 2023 he announced he would departing Franklin's Gardens and soon signed for London Irish
