Vernon Matongo is a Zimbabwean professional rugby union player, born on 28 February 2002 in Harare, Zimbabwe. He plays as a loosehead prop and has established himself as one of Zimbabwe's most promising rugby talents while competing professionally in South Africa.
Matongo grew up in the Cranborne suburb of Harare and attended Alexandra Park Primary School before earning a rugby scholarship to Northwood School in Durban, South Africa. At Northwood, he excelled both on and off the field, serving as the school's Head Prefect in 2020 while developing into a highly regarded front-row player.
After school, he enrolled at Stellenbosch University, where he studied Accounting and played for the university's renowned Maties Rugby Club. In 2024, he graduated with a Bachelor of Accounting, becoming the first member of his family to earn a university degree. His academic achievement reflected the importance he places on balancing education with his sporting ambitions.
Matongo signed his first professional contract with Western Province Rugby in 2021 after impressing in age-group competitions. He made his senior debut for Western Province in the Currie Cup in 2024 before progressing to the Stormers, where he has continued to develop as a powerful scrummaging prop. He also represented Zimbabwe at junior level and is widely regarded as one of the country's brightest rugby prospects.
Inspired by fellow Zimbabwean rugby legend Tendai Mtawarira, Matongo has spoken about his ambition to reach the highest levels of the game. His parents and older brother have played a significant role in his development, and he frequently credits their sacrifices and support for his success.
