It was never a question of ‘if’ Danelle Lochner was going to represent her
country on the international sporting stage, but ‘when’. The real surprise
came when Lochner, having played for the Proteas netball team and
in what looked set as a guaranteed career ahead of her, opted out of
that sport to pursue rugby. Again, even in a new sporting code, national
honours were always on the cards for Lochner once she ran out on the
rugby field, not only for the Springbok Women, but also Harlequins
Women in London, where she is contracted as a full-time professional
rugby player. Lochner brings a high-performance mindset to any team and
is a keen student of rugby and how to implement those fundamentals into
her own game. Her physicality compliments the South African pack and
her importance in setting up powerful mauls there for all to see.
