A powerful, physical and hard-working lock forward, Steenkamp represented Western Province at U18, U19 and U21 level before making his Currie Cup debut in 2009. Breaking onto the Super Rugby scene in 2012, the versatile lock then played in every Currie Cup match for WP when they won the Currie Cup in 2012.
