Duncan Matthews

Born in Atlantis, West Cape, South Africa, Matthews began playing rugby at a young age and began to get selected for representative sides at the U16 level.

He represented the Boland Cavaliers at the Grant Khomo Week in 2010 and earned himself a spot in the Springboks U16 squad. After graduating, he moved to Pretoria to join the Blue Bulls Academy from 2013-15 and continued along the Springbok pathway with their 2014 U20 team.

After 3 impressive seasons for Tuks in the Varsity Cup Duncan Matthews earned his call up to the Blue Bulls 2016 Currie Cup squad. Adept at wing, fullback and centre he made his Currie Cup debut against the Cheetahs in the 2nd Round of the tournament.

He continued to develop throughout his debut season and earned a spot in the Bulls 2017 Super Rugby squad. He had to wait until May for his Super Rugby debut, where he started on the wing against Super Rugby champions the Hurricanes. 4 minutes into his debut he scored his first Super Rugby try.

Matthews feautured in 3 more matches for the Bulls during the 2017 Super Rugby season and was included in the Blue Bulls Currie Cup squad. In August he signed a contract extension with the Bulls that will see him remain at the side until at least 2020.

After seven years with the Blue Bulls Club, Matthews signed with the Lions and continued his Currie Cup and Super Rugby level of play with his new side.

In December 2021, Matthews signed a deal to join Major League Rugby side The Seattle Seawolves until 2024.
