Matt Hodgson

25th Jun 1981 1.85m/103kg Openside Flanker

A quality member of the back row club, Hodgson hails from the New South Wales region of Australia and has developed into a top operator at Super Rugby level. At the age of 17 Hodgson was drafted into the Waratahs set up but as a flyhalf cum centre but was nurtured into a promising back row.

Since his time at the 'Tahs Hodgson has gone on to represent the Western Force where he became an integral member of their set up almost instantaneously.

Hodgson, having represented Australia at A, Under-20 and Sevens level, made his full test debut in the 2010 end of year tour.

The openside flanker and three-time Nathan Sharpe Medal winner signed for his 12th Super Rugby season with the Western Force in October 2016, having scored 90 points in 131 Super Rugby appearances.

In June 2017, Western Force legend and inaugural Matt Hodgson announced his retirement from professional rugby after 12 spectacular seasons with the Western Australian club.

The 35-year-old announced to his team-mates on Thursday that he would be hanging up the boots at the end of the season after 139 Super Rugby appearances in a career that has included three Nathan Sharpe Medals, four Geoffrey Stooke Force Man Awards and 11 Wallaby caps.

The hardnosed back-row started at openside flanker in the club’s inaugural match against the Brumbies in 2006, including four years as club captain from 2013-2016.
