It is a welcome return to the national team for Makua, who spend 18
months on the sideline due to injury. Before that, Makua’s star was bright,
as she was named in both the Springbok Women and Springbok Women’s
Sevens teams to their respective Rugby World Cups in 2022 and enjoyed
a stellar 2023 season before injury struck. Before that, Makua, another to
find her way to rugby through SA Rugby’s Youth Training Centres, where
she was first spotted playing for the Blue Bulls U16s, made the Junior
Springbok Women and a year later played in her first test match. Makua,
named as utility forward on the bench, had to cover on the wing on debut,
a job she did with aplomb, and it was no surprise when she was roped
into the Springbok Women’s Sevens squad in 2022, making her debut in
Toulouse. Her speed is a massive asset, but her work rate even more so as
was on display in the recent Rugby Africa Women’s Cup in Madagascar,
where she scored three tries in as many matches.
