Born and raised in Fiji, Tavatavanawai played for the Fiji national under-20 rugby union team before moving to New Zealand where he started playing for the Central Rugby Club. He was part of both the Crusaders and Highlanders wider squads during the 2021 Super Rugby season but he ended up playing for Tasman Mako in the NPC. After a very impressive first 7 games for Tasman Tavatavanawai was signed by Moana Pasifika in October 2021 for the 2022 Super Rugby Pacific season. He joined the Highlanders in 2024 where he started every game and topped Super Rugby Pacific for turnovers won at the tackle.
He made his All Blacks debut in 2025 in the July Series against France where he came off the bench in an impressive 43-17 New Zealand victory.
