Talk about the road less travelled to a Rugby World Cup, but that is Mary Zulu
for you. Left on the steps of the Brotherhood of Blessed Gérard in Mandini,
KwaZulu-Natal as a baby, the 22-year-old flyhalf today boasts international
caps, a B.Sc. Sport Science degree and a platform to show the world that you
don’t have to be a victim of circumstance. It is on the world rugby stage where
Zulu prefers to perform though. Her talents were spotted in the domestic U16
and U18 Girls Weeks, and it was no wonder that in 2022, the youthful Zulu
made her senior provincial debut as well as representing the Junior Springbok
Women. Neither was her test match debut in 2023, a start at fullback against
Canada in Madrid. She would play another five tests, including starting against
Cameroon at flyhalf and in 2024, started at flyhalf in all three Rugby Africa
Women’s Cup matches. Zulu’s defence, ability to read the game and execute
game plans made her an easy selection call to the Springbok Women coaching
staff. Eager to learn and improve and with a youthful exuberance that boost
team dynamics, Zulu is well-prepared for the biggest stage of her career.
