Porthen hails from Wynberg Boys's High and was 1st team captain and Head Prefect in 2022. In the same year he was named captain of the SA Schools’ rugby side. He was the first player from Wynberg to achieve that honour.
In 2024, he was appointed captain of the Junior Springboks for the Under‑20 Rugby Championship and World Rugby U20 Championship.
He plays for Western Province (provincial side) and is contracted with Stormers, a United Rugby Championship franchise.
In 2025 he won the Varsity Cup with the Ikey Tigers and u20 World Championship with South Africa u20
In 2025, he was listed among young talents given contract extensions by the Stormers
In October 2025, he was announced in the Springbok squad for their end of year tour.
