Singleton joins Glasgow Warriors one year after heart attack

Jack Singleton has signed a short-term deal with Glasgow Warriors, one year after a heart attack in training.

The England international hasn't played since the cardiac event during Gloucester training in September last year.

But he has recently returned to full training and has now penned a deal at Scotstoun and will provide cover during the Nations Championship.

The 30-year-old scored 20 tries in 75 outings for the Cherry and Whites and previously played for Worcester Warriors, RC Toulon and Saracens.

Singleton has four caps for England but none since 2022 and the hooker is Scottish-qualified through his grandparents.

And he spoke of his appreciation over the deal at Warriors as he aims to return to competitive rugby after a long time out of action.

Singleton said: “It’s been really good so far.

“All the lads have been really welcoming, I’m incredibly grateful to be here and I’m looking forward to getting stuck into it with the boys.

“I couldn’t be more pleased to be back in rugby. It’s been a long old year, and for Glasgow to give me this opportunity is something for which I’m incredibly grateful. I’m excited to be in the clear and get back out onto a pitch.

“I watched Glasgow a lot in the Champions Cup last year. I saw that run they went on, and watched them beat Toulouse at home where the atmosphere looked incredible. They play an expansive style of rugby and I know they’re how strong their pack has been for the last couple of years, especially around that driving maul, so I’m looking forward to learning off the lads here and getting involved in that.”

Head coach Smith added: “With Gregor Hiddleston and Seb Stephen having both made their Scotland debuts over the summer and with both players likely to be involved during the Nations Championship and Guinness Six Nations, Jack brings a wealth of top-flight experience into our environment that will benefit us during those periods.

“He is someone who has already begun to throw himself into becoming a Warrior, and is willing to work hard for his team-mates and his club. He will also provide a positive influence on the development of our three young hookers.

“We are pleased to welcome him into our environment and look forward to working closely with him over the coming months.”
