The Chiefs release an injury update on Sam Cane

Chiefs and All Blacks captain Sam Cane took a heavy knock colliding with Jordie Barrett’s knee 26 minutes into The Chiefs’ 31-18 defeat in Wellington on Saturday.

The incident left Cane prone on the turf and there was immediate before trainers and medics arrived but Cane was able to walk himself off of the pitch unassisted.

Cane did not return and will now face return-to-play testing measures with the Chiefs confirming on Monday that their captain has sustained a concussion.

"Chiefs captain Sam Cane sustained a concussion after tackling Hurricanes player Jordie Barrett on Saturday evening in their final 2020 Investec Super Rugby Aotearoa match. Cane will now follow required return to play protocols." a statement from the franchise said.

There was major concern during the game for Cane after the neck fracture he suffered in South Africa playing for the All Blacks that almost ended his career two years ago.

However, Warren Gatland cleared Cane of major damage to his neck area after the game and with the Chiefs finishing their 0-8 season one week early for the bye, the newly-appointed national captain has three weeks to recover for the North versus South match on August 29 at Eden Park.
