2018 Test Win Ratios

With all the tests done and dusted for 2018 we take a look at how the Top 10 sides have done this year in terms of their win ratio.


1. New Zealand

Despite the two losses to the Springboks and recently against Ireland, All Blacks have actually had a decent season and were able to put together a win streak of six in a row before their first defeat. The All Blacks also saved their biggest win for last as they smashed Italy 3-66.

2. Ireland

 



 

The Irish have been absolutely incredible this season and to many should be 2018 team of the year. Joe Schmidt’s side has only lost to Australia this season and they got a win percentage of 91.67%.

 

Ireland's incredible season was topped off with a Grand Slam Six Nations, a first Series win over Australia and their first win over the All Blacks in Dublin.

3. Wales 

Wales are currently ranked third in the World Rugby Rankings and rightfully so. Warren Gatland’s men have put together an eight-game winning streak since February and have a win percentage of 83.33%.

 

Wales lost just two games this year to England at Twicken and Ireland at the Aviva Stadium. Gatland's side also beat the Springboks twice, ended a long drought against the Wallabies and earned a clean sweep in the Autumn Internationals for the first time.

4. England

 

Eddie Jones troops have had a poor 2018 but made up with the a fine Autumn where they claimed a Springbok scalp and pushed the All Blacks all the way before beating the Wallabies to earn a 50% win percentage. The English have struggled to get a winning streak together this year, but between February and June, they lost six on the trot.

5. South Africa 

 

One wouldn’t say 2018 has been a complete success for the Springboks, but there have been improvements since Rassie Erasmus has taken charge. The South African’s are currently fifth on the World Rugby Rankings and have not won more than two games in a row.

Win Percentage: 50%

6. Australia 

 

 

For Australian rugby, 2018 has a been a year to forget as they have only managed to win 30.77% of their matches. Michael Cheika’s side has not been able to win two games on the trot this season which is a real worry.

Win Percentage: 30.77%

Biggest Win: 26-7 against Italy – 17 November 2018

Biggest Loss: 37-18 against England - 24 November 2018

 

7. Scotland 

 

The Scots are now ranked 7th in the world and they are arguably the most improved side amongst the Tier 1 nations. Gregor Townsend side has won seven games this season, which has calculated to a 58.33% win percentage.

Lost: 5

Win Percentage: 58.33%

Biggest Win: 48-10 against Canada – 9 June 2018

Biggest Loss: 7-34 against Wales – 3 February 2018

 

 

8. France

 

The French, who are 8th on the World Rugby, are another side that probably cannot wait for 2018 to end after losing eight out of their 11 games, which means they ended the year with a win percentage of 27.27%.

 

France did have a number of close calls against Ireland, South Africa and Wales but their year was summed up with a first ever defeat to Fiji in their final match of the season.

9. Argentina 

 

The Los Pumas have certainly improved but they haven’t been able to get the much-needed result the desired. Beating the Springboks will certainly be the highlight of their year, but they will be encouraged that they pushed Ireland pretty close.

Win Percentage: 18.18%

Biggest Loss: 15-44 against Scotland – 23 June 2018

 

 

10.  Fiji 

Fiji have played the least amount of games out of the top 10 nations, but they have managed to rack up a 66.67% win percentage even though they have mostly played Tier 2 opponents.

 

Fiji did claim a historic Tier 1 scalp beating France in Paris for the first time in their history.

Biggest Win: 68-7 against Uruguay – 17 November 2018

Biggest Loss: 17-54 against Scotland – 10 November 2018

 

Special Mention: USA (Ranked 13th)

 

The United States of America have had a standout year and their best in history. The US have won nine test in a row, which has saw them skyrocket up the World Rugby Rankings to their highest ranking. 

 

Ireland ended USA's unbeaten run of 10 games (9 tests with one game being against Argentina XV).
