5 of the best games in this World Cup
1. Japan vs South Africa
Undoubtedly the biggest shock in World Cup history, or even in world sport itself. Japan produced a stunning performance to defeat the Springboks in Brighton 34-32 with a last minute try from Karne Hesketh. The Brave Blossoms came out with a ferocious game plan and completely took the Boks by surprise. Trailing 32-29 with 30 seconds to go, Japan turned down the draw and chanced their luck at a win. Astonishingly in the 83rd minute the ball went wide and Hesketh squeezed over in left corner to create history.
2. England vs Wales
In the most topsy turvy game of the World Cup, Wales managed to come back from 10 points to silence the Twickenham crowd. Dan Biggar put in the performance of his life, scoring 23 points and breaking English hearts.
3. Ireland vs Argentina
Argentina put in one of the performances of the World Cup when they blew Ireland out of the water in the Quarter Final in Cardiff. Los Pumas raced into an early 17-0 lead with tries from Matias Moroni and Juan Imhoff in the opening 10 minutes. Ireland crept back into the game and were within 3 with 30 minutes to go but the Argentinians ran in a further 2 tries to seal a 43-20 victory.
4. Australia vs Wales
No tries were scored at Twickenham but it was still one of the best encounters at the World Cup. Both teams aiming for top spot in Pool A but neither could cross the white wash. Wales put in a strong defensive effort. But what epitomised the game was the defensive effort of the Wallabies who with 13 men, kept out the Welsh on their own line for 10 minutes with heroic defence. A truly amazing spectacle.
5. Scotland vs Australia
Scotland were written of before this final with Australia unbeaten and playing some scintillating rugby. However the Scots went in to half time with a 16-15 lead despite the Wallabies scoring 3 tries to Scotland's 1. Midway through the second half Australia lead by 8 and the game was slipping from Scotland, but after a Greig Laidlaw penalty, with 5 minutes left to go Mark Bennett scored an intercept try to put Vern Cotter's men on course for a famous victory and a semi final place. The drama continued as in the last play of the match Scotland gave away a dubious penalty and Foley stepped up to break Scottish hearts. One that will be talked about for years to come.
