A memorable day 2 of the World Cup for sure today, with the main talking point Japan's fabulous win over the Springboks. Here at UR we take a look at who impressed.
5. Louis Picamoles
Picamoles proved to be a game changer for France once again, showing his exceptional strength on the ball. The powerful no. 8 broke Italy's line on several occasions, beating 5 defenders and keeping France's attack alive. The Toulouse back row made an impressive 12 carries throughout the game and earned 2 turnovers.
4. Iain Henderson
Henderson proved why Joe Schmidt selected him ahead of Devin Toner, with a blistering performance to open his World Cup campaign. The big second row made 13 carries, beating 2 defenders and scoring a try in the process. While working well in attack, he provided a lot in defense also, making a massive 11 tackles.
3. Michael Leitch
Michael Leitch led his nation to victory in what could be the biggest upset in Rugby World Cup history. While making some huge carries against a very strong South African side, Leitch managed also to score the first try for Japan in this World Cup. Certainly the experience earned by Leitch at the Chiefs last season has paid off.
2. Jonathan Sexton
Jonathan Sexton had another exceptional game of rugby for Ireland in Ireland's RWC opener. The outhalf controlled the encounter with some exceptional kicking both from the tee and from his hands. Sexton scored 14 points, breaking down to 1 try, 1 kick at goal and 3 conversions, with an 80% kicking rate.
1. Ayumu Goromaru
Goromaru opened his World Cup campaign in historic fashion with Japan's victory today. The full back was the centre of attention for the majority of the game, making some essential kicks to keep his side's hopes alive. Goromaru was the man to score the pivotal try for Japan in the 70th minute, and was the turning point of the game.
