Bears sign John Edwards following groundbreaking Talent ID Day

Bristol Bears can confirm the signing of versatile back-row player John Edwards following the club’s Professional Rugby Talent ID Day and subsequent trial period throughout pre-season.

Edwards, who attended the day at the High Performance Centre in April, was one of eight players invited to take part in pre-season training with Pat Lam’s squad and after impressing during this period, the 19-year-old has now joined the Academy.

A former Harrow School pupil and member of the London Irish Academy, Edwards is set to start his second year at Exeter University alongside his time with the Bears.

The Bears can also confirm the signing of fly-half, Raff Weston, who joins the club through the partnership with Dings Crusaders. The former Bath Academy and Beechen Cliff pupil is now in his final year at the University of Bath.

Director of Rugby, Pat Lam, said: ““We created the Professional Rugby Talent ID Day to give young players a chance to experience the Bears High Performance Centre and show their skills to our coaching team.

“Because the Bears have the smallest Academy area, the fewest schools, and the lowest number of registered players aged 13–19 in the Premiership, we need new ways to find and support young talent from across the country.

“John impressed us at the Talent ID Day and during pre-season training, so we’re excited to give him a chance to prove himself in a professional environment.

“We also have a strong partnership with Dings Crusaders, so it’s fantastic to give Raff the chance to pursue his rugby dreams as well.”

“Fitz Harding, our youngest-ever captain, proves how valuable different pathways into the professional game can be. This is another example of the Bears finding new ways to overcome challenges and give players the chance to succeed.”
