Cardiff held their nerve in a chaotic Welsh derby, overcoming early disciplinary setbacks and a fierce Ospreys comeback to secure a hard fought victory.
The game exploded into life almost immediately. Cardiff were reduced to 14 men inside six minutes when Liam Belcher saw yellow, but they absorbed pressure well and struck first through the boot of Callum Sheedy. Moments later, the match swung again as Ospreys’ Daniel Kasende was shown red in the 17th minute, giving Cardiff a crucial advantage.
Cardiff capitalised quickly. Belcher atoned for his earlier card by crashing over twice from close range, both tries built on dominant forward carries. Despite Owen Watkin also seeing yellow, Cardiff kept control, and Sheedy’s accurate kicking ensured they built a steady lead.
Ospreys stayed in touch through Keiran Williams, who finished off a sharp attacking move before Dan Edwards added the conversion. But Cardiff responded again, with Dan Thomas powering over early in the second half, followed by another Sheedy conversion to stretch the lead.
At that point, Cardiff looked comfortable.
But the final quarter belonged to Ospreys.
Jack Walsh finished a sweeping backline move in the 67th minute, and Edwards converted to spark belief. Minutes later, Josh McNally was sent to the sin bin for a deliberate knock on, giving Ospreys momentum and territory.
They took full advantage. Edwards crossed in the 76th minute and converted his own try to bring Ospreys within touching distance, setting up a tense finish.
Cardiff, however, held firm. Despite late pressure and Ospreys pushing for a dramatic turnaround, a crucial defensive stand and composure at the breakdown saw them close out the game.
A match filled with cards, momentum swings, and relentless intensity, but Cardiff’s clinical edge in key moments ultimately proved decisive.
