The Hurricanes are pleased to confirm that assistant coach Cory Jane has signed a contract extension that will keep him at the club until 2028.
A Hurricanes icon who made 121 appearances as a player and played a key role in the club’s 2016 title success, Jane will enter his 20th season as a Hurricanes player or coach during the 2028 campaign.
News of his extension also falls ahead of this week’s match against the Blues, where he will become the first person to both play and coach 100 Super Rugby matches for the Hurricanes.
"I’m stoked to have signed on for another couple of years with the Hurricanes,” Jane said.
“I’m hugely passionate about the club, which has been a big part of my career and my life. Being from Upper Hutt, I grew up watching and wanting to be part of the Hurricanes, so to stay on with the club for a few more seasons means a lot.
“I love the environment and I love coming into work every day, and I’m excited about the direction that the club is heading.”
Jane’s affiliation with the Hurricanes began in 2007, when he made a try-scoring debut during the club’s season-opening match against the Queensland Reds in Brisbane.
The 43-year-old went on to establish himself as a constant presence on the right wing and at fullback, notching his 50th cap against the Blues in March 2011 and becoming the eighth Hurricanes centurion during a home victory over the Jaguares in April 2016.
Later that season, Jane scored the opening try of the 2016 Super Rugby final as the Hurricanes defeated the Lions to claim the club’s first-ever title. He also featured in the Hurricanes’ historic 31-all draw against the British & Irish Lions in 2017.
Jane later returned as a Hurricanes assistant coach ahead of the 2020 season and has remained in that role at the club ever since, quickly becoming one of New Zealand’s best defensive coaches.
In addition to his Hurricanes playing career, Jane played for the All Blacks on 55 occasions and was a 2011 World Cup champion. He also represented the Māori All Blacks, Junior All Blacks, New Zealand Barbarians, Wellington, and Hawke’s Bay, and was a 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medallist with the All Blacks Sevens.
More recently, Jane has worked as an All Blacks XV assistant coach during their 2024 and 2025 end-of-year tours to Europe.
Hurricanes head coach Clark Laidlaw is excited to have secured Jane’s services for another two seasons.
"We’re extremely happy that CJ has decided to extend his stay with the club,” Laidlaw said.
“He’s a passionate Hurricane, he’s been here a long time. His on-field success and experiences have been influential in shaping his coaching practice and the mana he holds with the group.
“He leads our defence and has done an amazing job. He has a real desire to defend well, and it’s now ingrained in our players’ DNA to enjoy defending. He’s had a massive part to play in that mindset shift.
“He’s not just a good defence coach. He also has big input into other parts of our game and has had a particularly massive influence on our outside backs.
“Every day, he turns up with an amazing attitude and energy that’s quite infectious and rubs off on everybody, so we feel grateful and fortunate that he’s decided to continue with the club.
“He’s hugely motivated to keep improving, not only as a coach, but improving our players, and endeavouring to achieve the same success he had as a player by winning a championship with the club as a coach.”
