Crusaders Surge Past Moana Pasifika in High-Scoring Super Rugby Clash

The Crusaders delivered a commanding second-half performance to defeat Moana Pasifika 50–21 in Round Six of Super Rugby Pacific, securing their first back-to-back wins of the season in a match marked by milestones and standout individual efforts.

The fixture was a special occasion for several Crusaders players. Young midfielder Cooper Grant and winger Kurtis Macdonald made their debuts, becoming Crusaders #304 and #305 respectively, while tighthead prop Fletcher Newell celebrated his 50th appearance for the club.

Moana Pasifika began the match with intensity, applying early pressure through direct forward play and testing the Crusaders around the breakdown. However, the visitors struck first in the fourth minute when Braydon Ennor powered over in the left corner following a quick turnover, giving the Crusaders a 5–0 lead.

Despite the early setback, Moana responded strongly. Their forwards dominated territory through a series of lineouts and scrums, pinning the Crusaders inside their own 22. However, crucial defensive efforts—including a turnover from Tom Christie near the try line—kept Moana from capitalizing.

The Crusaders extended their lead in the 17th minute when Sevu Reece finished off a fluid backline move to score near the posts. Grant added the conversion, marking his first Super Rugby points and pushing the score to 12–0.

Moana Pasifika refused to fade, mounting a comeback through sustained pressure. Fine interplay between their forwards and backs resulted in two tries—first to Semisi Tupou Ta’eiloa’s support runner and then to halfback Jonathan Taumateine—giving the home side a 14–12 lead midway through the first half.

The Crusaders regained composure before halftime. Grant’s well-weighted cross-kick found Chay Fihaki, who scored in the corner to restore the lead at 17–14. Despite continued pressure late in the half, Moana’s defence held firm, preventing further damage before the break.

The second half saw a decisive shift in momentum. After withstanding early pressure, the Crusaders exploded into action. Leicester Fainga’anuku produced a moment of brilliance, breaking through from midfield to score a stunning solo try that extended the lead to 24–14.

Moments later, the Crusaders struck again. A sweeping counterattack from deep inside their own half ended with Codie Taylor crashing over, stretching the advantage to 31–14.

From there, the visitors took complete control. Their forward pack asserted dominance through powerful mauls and relentless pick-and-go phases. Taylor added his second try, and debutant Kurtis Macdonald crossed in the corner after an expansive backline movement.

Fihaki continued his impressive performance, contributing accurate goal-kicking and adding a second try late in the match as the Crusaders brought up 50 points.

Moana Pasifika managed a late consolation try through Siaosi Nginingini, who intercepted a pass and raced away to score under the posts, bringing the final score to 50–21.

After the match, Fletcher Newell reflected on his milestone appearance.

“It’s really special. Growing up in the Crusaders region, it’s every young boy’s dream to play for the Crusaders just once, and I’m proud to reach 50 games,” he said.

Head coach Rob Penney praised his side’s execution and resilience.

“The work was done in the first half. The plan was clear, and the players executed it well,” Penney said. “It’s never easy coming here, but the team showed real composure.”

The Crusaders now head into a bye week before preparing for their next fixture, carrying strong momentum after an emphatic away victory.
