Currie Cup Round Up

The previous weekend saw Round 9 of the Currie Cup underway with 8 teams competing for a spot in the semifinal, with Golden Lions, Pumas, Western Province and Freestate Cheetahs filling up the remaining semifinal spots.

Golden Lions vs Natal Sharks:

A strong second half performance by the Lions saw them claim a 28-16 win over the Sharks in the Currie Cup Premier Division. The Sharks had the better of the first half and took a 10-0 lead into the break. However, the Lions were superb in the second forty as they ran in three tries to secure the win and guarantee themselves a semi-final spot.

The Golden Lions have won the competition 11 times, with their recent win being in 2015.

Eastern Province Kings vs Pumas: 


The Pumas held on in the last 10 minutes to secure a 38-30 victory over the EP Kings. The Kings led throughout the match and looked to be the stronger and dominant side for the first 70 minutes. Two converted tries by the Pumas in the last 10 minutes turned this match on its head and the Pumas came away with their heads held high.

Western Province vs Boland Cavaliers:


WP scrape into the Currie Cup Semi Finals after having to come from behind to beat a spirited Boland side at Newlands. 2 quick tries by the visitors gave them an 8 point lead which WP managed to reel in and overtake to win.

The Western Province have won the competition 33 times, more times than any other team, with their last win being in 2014.

Freestate Cheetahs vs Griquas:

 In the first few seconds Griquas were already a try ahead after a dreadful error in defense. From then on Cheetahs never looked back as they scored try after try as they kept breaking tackles of the Griquas players. 

The end score being 63-26 and Cheetahs will look to continue this form into their home semifinal in 2 weeks time.

The Cheetahs will look to win the title for the 5th time since last winning it in 2007.
