Duhan van der Merwe linked with Racing 92 amid Worcester Warriors financial crisis

Duhan van der Merwe linked with Racing 92 amid Worcester Warriors financial crisis

Clubs around Europe are monitoring the situation at Worcester Warriors as the start of the Premiership looms.

Worcester have been served a winding-up petition by HMRC over unpaid tax, believed to be more than £6m and are reportedly close to being to be placed into administration.

Edinburgh coach Mike Blair has admitted that he is keeping an eye on the situation in Worcester with a view to offer a lifeline to their Scottish players, which includes British & Irish Lions' Rory Sutherland and Duhan van der Merwe.

“We do have a little bit of budget left for emergencies, injuries and what have you but we’ve not earmarked anyone,” Blair said.

“Obviously the Worcester situation is one that is ongoing and once we get clarity on what exactly is happening there we can have further discussions on it but at the moment we’re sitting back and waiting for that to play out.”

He added:

“The difficult bit is it might not be right for now but it might be right for tomorrow so do you take the hit now?” said Blair. “So what I mean by that is that with not having much budget now, can we really stress that and get someone in who we’d really want for the following year? It’s complicated.

“But we’ll let the situation play out. Hopefully, they get bought out, they resolve things and they’re able to continue how they’re going. If the situation changes and players become available then we’ll have to see how that fits with what we want.”

Meanwhile, Midi Olympique reports that Duhan van der Merwe could be on his way to Racing 92.

Racing 92 are looking for injury cover for league convert Regan Grace who is set to be sidelined for most of the season through injury after recently signing for the side.

Christian Wade edges closer to joining the French side according to the report after featuring in a sevens tournament this past weekend.

The report adds that Racing 92 coach Laurent Travers is interested in bringing van der Merwe in even if they are successful in signing Wade.
