This was the weekend when talk of England doing anything other than winning the World Cup should have ended.
The evasive “short, medium and long-term” phrasings that littered the announcement of England’s initial squad will not do, while the word “development” should be banned from the vocabulary of the management until the team lifts the Webb Ellis Cup; winning or losing, there is no neutral ground.
If there is a long-term plan (and, of course, there has to be) Ian Ritchie, the RFU chief executive, should relieve Stuart Lancaster of any relevant duties until November 1.
