Former Ireland International Gary Halpin dies

Former Irish international Gary Halpin has died at the age of 55.

A former prop who represented Leinster, Harlequins and Ireland, Halpin played prop in two World Cups for Ireland, famously scoring a try against New Zealand in the 1995 edition.

Ireland went on to lose the game 43-19. He made his Irish debut against England in 1990, with his career-ending at the World Cup five years later after the loss to France.

Halpin also represented Ireland in the 1987 World Athletics Championship in the hammer event. Following his retirement, he was a teacher in England before moving home to a position at the Cistercian College in Roscrea, Co Tipperary.
