Gloucester issues statement regarding Round 22 result

Disappointment has shrouded the much-anticipated match-up between Gloucester and Northampton Saints as the latter were forced to withdraw from the match, thus handing the Cherry & Whites they five points they were so desperately looking for.

The decision was made after it became apparent that Saints were unable to field a sufficient number of front row forwards to compete in the Round 22 fixture. This came after a number of positive Covid-19 tests surfaced in the Sale Sharks camp after their clash with Saints in the last round, prompting the latter to follow isolation protocols which has left their player stocks wanting in certain areas.

Premiership Regulations states that:

“In the interests of safety each team playing in the Premiership must have at least six (6) fit and able Players in the squad who can play at hooker, tight head prop and loosehead prop who are suitably trained and experienced to ensure that on the first occasion that a replacement in any front row position is required (whether due to injury or consequent to a Player(s) being temporarily suspended or ordered off) the team can continue to play safely with contested scrums.”

Gloucester issued the following statement:

“We are disappointed that our season has concluded in this manner, it certainly is not the way we wanted to finish our campaign. However, the safety of all players is absolutely paramount.

As a result of Northampton Saints forfeiting the game, Gloucester Rugby will be awarded a 20-0 bonus-point victory.

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank our partners, fans, staff and friends of the Club for your encouragement and support in what has been a long and challenging season in many ways. Together, we are a squad of thousands.”
