- 835
Ireland got their Autumn Nations Cup off to the perfect start with a 32-9 home win over Wales in round one. Some early dominance at scrum time saw Ireland open the scoring with a penalty ten minutes in to lead 3-0. Wales levelled matters with a penalty of their own approaching the end of the opening quarter, but five minutes later Quinn Roux muscled over from close range for the first try of the match. Shortly after another Irish penalty extended the lead out to 13-3. Wales pulled three points back with a penalty on the half hour mark, but that was cancelled out by an Irish kick at goal five minutes from halftime as the hosts took a 16-6 advantage into the break. Wales missed a long range shot at goal early in the second half, but would make it a seven point ball game with a successful penalty ten minutes in. A few minutes later Ireland had restored their ten point margin with a penalty making it 19-9. Wales missed a chance to close the gap as a penalty attempt went wide heading into the final quarter. Ireland began to take control of the match and kept the scoreboard ticking over, slotting a further two penalties to increase their lead out to 25-9 with a little under ten minutes remaining. Wales were unable to get back into the match and it was Ireland who would have the final say as James Lowe powered over on debut with time up on the clock to seal an emphatic victory.
