James Cronin's anti-doping case could be reopened

Munster forward James Cronin's anti-doping case may be reopened after he received a one-month ban following pharmacy mix-up.

The Irish Times has reported that a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Sport Ireland and the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI) could result in the reopening James Cronin's anti-doping case.

The 29-year-old tested positive for prednisolone, a synthetic steroid, and prednisone after the Champions Cup match against Racing 92 at Thomond Park in November 2019.

The findings of the investigation of the independent judicial officer, Antony Davies concluded that the player “bears at least some fault”, only a one-month suspension was imposed during the time of the lockdown.

Sport Ireland, although not happy with the leniency of the suspension, decided against an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), although the MOU with the PSI, signed on July 1st, now allows for the fresh exchange of information,“particularly when there are overlapping interests or areas of mutual concern”.
