Joe Schmidt provides an update on Joey Carbery

Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt has proved an update on Joey Carbery after the standoff left the field early in Ireland's win over Italy at Aviva Stadium.

Carbery attempted to walk off the field early in the second hafl but he struggled to put weight on his foot which resulted in the stretcher.

Speaking to RTE after the game, Joe Schmidt confirmed that Carbery underwent an X-Ray and that it showed there was no fracture.

“With Joey, I can say there is no fracture because we’ve had him X-Rayed in there.

“He has a bit of swelling, so we will let that go down and get it scanned. If we don’t think it’s too bad he’ll rehab in Portugal ahead of the England game. If not England, hopefully, Wales.”

Ireland travel to Portugal next week to continue their preparation for the World Cup in warmer weather before they tackle England on August 24.

Ireland will then play two test against Wales before departing for Japan and Schmidt is confident Carbery’s injury won’t rule him out of the showpiece event.

“It’s too soon to say (for sure), but I don’t think it’ll keep him out of the World Cup.”
