Josh Macleod signs new Scarlets contract

Captain Josh Macleod has become the latest player to sign a new contract committing his future to the Scarlets as the team continues to build towards the next phase of its performance journey.

 

The Wales international, who hails from Pembrokeshire and is a product of the Scarlets Academy, has made 148 appearances for the club since his debut in 2015, establishing himself as one of the leading back-row forwards in Welsh rugby.

 

A central figure both on and off the field, Macleod has been instrumental in driving standards, culture and connection within the squad. His leadership, consistency and relentless work-rate embody the values at the heart of the Scarlets environment.

 

The 29-year-old led the Scarlets to the EPCR Challenge Cup semi-finals in 2022-23 before officially taking over from club great Jonathan ‘Fox’ Davies the following season.

 

Josh’s outstanding form in the Scarlets No. 7 jersey saw him win his fifth Test cap against England at the start of the 2026 Six Nations and as he looks to return from injury in the coming weeks, he will be aiming to help the Scarlets finish the campaign with a flourish.

 

He said: “The Scarlets has shaped me as a person from the moment I joined the Academy at 16. To be here now as captain, is something I’ll never take lightly - it means a huge amount to me.

 

“This season has tested us, no doubt, but it’s also brought the group closer together. There’s a real honesty about us and a willingness to keep turning up for each other, and that’s been important.

 

“We’ve shown glimpses of what we’re capable of against top sides in the URC and Europe. The challenge now is turning those moments into consistency.

 

“There’s a lot to be excited about here - especially with the young players coming through and the direction the club is heading. We know what this badge stands for, we’re determined to do it justice every time we put the jersey on and give our supporters something to believe in.”

 

Josh added: “It’s been frustrating being sidelined the last couple of weeks - you always want to be out there with the boys, especially at this stage of the season.

 

“I’m not far away now and working hard to get back. Hopefully I can play my part towards the end of the season. If we can build a bit of momentum, it gives us a solid platform going into pre-season and into next year.”

 

Macleod’s influence extends beyond his performances, with his professionalism and commitment setting the tone for the wider squad as the club moves forward next season onwards.

 

Interim Director of Rugby Nigel Davies said: “Josh is not just an important player for us — he is a leader in every sense.

 

“He drives standards every day, he connects people, and he represents exactly what we want this team to stand for.

 

“As we continue to evolve our programme, having players like Josh at the core is critical. He understands what it takes to perform, but more importantly, he understands what it takes to build a team.

 

“Josh leads through his actions. He is brave in how he plays, connected in how he brings people together, and he has the mindset to keep pushing standards forward. Those are the qualities we are building this team around.”

 

The re-signing of Macleod represents a strong statement of intent as the Scarlets continue to shape a squad capable of competing at the highest level.

 

Davies added: “He has grown up in the region, came through our pathway and has been at the club since he was a teenager.

 

“He has also proven himself an outstanding competitor; he galvanises the team when he plays and is consistently one of the URC’s top performers around the breakdown. We are delighted he has committed his future to the Scarlets.”

 

Along with Josh, No. 8 Fletcher Anderson has also signed a new deal, with other re-signing and recruitment announcements to be made in the coming weeks.

Capten y Scarlets Josh Macleod yw’r chwaraewr diweddaraf i arwyddo cytundeb newydd gyda’r Scarlets wrth i’r tîm parhau i adeiladu tuag at y gam nesaf yn eu dyfodol.

Dywedodd: “Mae’r Scarlets wedi fy llunio fel person o’r eiliad ymunais â’r Academi yn 16 oed. I fod yma nawr fel capten, yw rhywbeth na fyddaf byth yn ei gymryd yn ysgafn - mae’n golygu llawer iawn i mi.

 

“Mae’r tymor hwn wedi ein herio, heb os, ond mae hefyd wedi dod â’r grŵp yn agosach at ein gilydd. Mae yna onestrwydd a pharodrwydd i barhau i weithio’n galed i’n gilydd, ac mae hynny wedi bod yn bwysig.

 

“Rydyn ni wedi dangos cipolwg ar yr hyn rydyn ni’n gallu ei wneud yn erbyn timau gorau’r URC ac Ewrop. Yr her nawr yw creu cysondeb.

Ychwanegodd Josh: “Mae wedi bod yn rhwystredig bod ar yr ystlys yn ystod yr wythnosau diwethaf - dwi bob amser eisiau bod mas yna gyda’r bechgyn, yn enwedig ar y cam olaf hyn o’r tymor.

 

“Dydw i ddim ymhell i ffwrdd nawr ac yn gweithio’n galed i ddychwelyd. Gobeithio y gallaf chwarae fy rhan tua diwedd y tymor. Os gallwn ni adeiladu ychydig o fomentwm, mae’n rhoi llwyfan cadarn i ni wrth fynd i mewn i’r haf ac i’r flwyddyn nesaf.”

 

Mae dylanwad Macleod yn ymestyn y tu hwnt i'w berfformiadau, gyda'i broffesiynoldeb a'i ymrwymiad yn gosod y naws ar gyfer y garfan ehangach wrth i'r clwb symud ymlaen y tymor nesaf.

“Mae hefyd wedi profi ei hun yn gystadleuydd rhagorol; mae'n ysgogi'r tîm pan mae'n chwarae ac yn gyson yn un o berfformwyr gorau'r URC. Rydym wrth ein bodd ei fod wedi ymrwymo ei ddyfodol i'r Scarlets.”

 

Ynghyd â Josh, mae’r wythwr Fletcher Anderson hefyd wedi llofnodi cytundeb newydd, gyda chyhoeddiadau eraill am ail-lofnodi a recriwtio i'w gwneud yn yr wythnosau nesaf.
