Nigel Owens to referee Wales vs Barbarians

Welsh Rugby Union have revealed that following 'special dispensation' from World Rugby, Welshman Nigel Owens will referee a Wales game for the first time when they host the Barbarians on November 30th at Principality Stadium.

The 46-year-old will become the first official to be put in charge of an international involving his own country.

A WRU statement on the upcoming game said: "A further unique move will see Welsh refereeing royalty Nigel Owens officiate a match involving his native country for the first time in his career – after receiving special dispensation from World Rugby."

The tournament in Japan will be Owens' fourth World Cup, with him having officiated in 2007 and 2011, as well as 2015.

Current Wales coach Warren Gatland will be coaching the Barbarians for the match as his successor Wayne Pivac takes charge of the team for the first time.
