The fact that everybody knows the rules concerning the Aviva Premiership play-offs doesn’t lessen the pain of finishing top of the table at the end of the regular season but not having your day of glory at Twickenham.
Northampton Saints, who have shown the club at its best for much of the season, saved their worst till last in losing at home to Saracens 29-24.
The sense of deflation was palpable as the crowd streamed away from Franklins Gardens but there was not much complaining.
On the day Saints made far too many errors and Saracens were the better side.
